Managing Director’s Message

We are all so proud of BG&E's achievements over the last year leveraging off our strong foundation to assist our clients to deliver extraordinary built environments for the community. At times we feel we are delivering the impossible, however with curiosity, bravery and trust we turn aspirations into reality.

As we reflect on the financial year 2023, I am proud to note BG&E’s continued growth and success. We have delivered numerous projects around the world which has expanded our workforce, opened new offices, or relocated to new premises to accommodate larger teams.  We have diversified our disciplines and expanded to service new sectors. However, despite this strong and sustained growth, we continue to be steadfastly motivated by BG&E’s Why:

  • Rich culture: spending time with people who share a passion for engineering and genuinely care about each other.
  • Solving problems: optimising the design and construction process through original thinking and developing new ways to do things.
  • Making a difference: leaving lasting physical legacies that improve communities and having a positive influence on each other.

To further strengthen relationships with clients and industry partners, we have engaged in analysis with an external provider to gain new insight into how BG&E is viewed by external stakeholders. These insights will allow us to further improve as we tailor our approach to foster stronger connections.

In partnership with clients and industry, we drove advancements in digital engineering, materials and durability technology, adaptive reuse, mass timber, and reducing embodied, operational, and whole life-cycle carbon.

Pleasingly, our efforts were recognised, as we won numerous awards for Quay Quarter Tower (QQT) in New South Wales (NSW), Allianz Stadium, Hay Street Vertical Clearance Improvement Project, Mandurah Bridge Project in Western Australia (WA), and Olderfleet in Victoria (VIC).

We were honoured to have been nominated by our clients for Client Choice Awards 2023 'Most Innovative Built & Natural Environment Consulting Firm' and 'Best Provider to Construction & Infrastructure' awards – and we are pleased to announce we were named Finalists in both categories. This fantastic result is a testament to the incredible work ethic and technical excellence of the BG&E team.

Our Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Construction Engineering Disciplines are at the core of BG&E and continue their track record of steadily expansion and delivering extraordinary built environments – solidifying their reputation as industry partners in Australia and key countries globally.

Pleasingly, our Emerging Business Divisions – which comprise Digital Engineering, Construction Engineering, Defence, Flooding & Hydrology, Geotechnical, Rail, Sustainability, Timber, Traffic & Transport Planning, and Water Infrastructure – continue to grow with increased market share as clients increase their understanding of the value we bring. Of particular note is the growth of our Rail and Construction Engineering sectors.

Likewise, the Specialist Business Divisions - which includes Materials & Durability and Facades – continued to cement their positions as well-established industry leaders in their respective fields, the result of another year marked by remarkable innovation, collaboration, problem solving, and the delivery of outstanding projects.

Our expanded deck of Disciplines has allowed BG&E to break into new sectors and engage with new clients – which bodes well for a future pipeline of diversified projects.

We focused on empowering each other and improved employee engagement and retention. During the fiscal year 2023, a total of 67 colleagues were promoted and we completed a global Employee Engagement Survey, in which more than 81 per cent of our people participated, and our People & Culture team is now working hard to respond to the survey findings to enhance our attractiveness as a place to work.  Our staff retention improved and a stronger attractiveness in joining our team.

In the last 12 months, we welcomed the following Executives to the BG&E Community:

  • Anna Giorgianni – Head of Marketing & Communications
  • Barry Roben – Leader – Melbourne Buildings Lead
  • Deborah Hutchinson – Traffic & Transport Planning Lead QLD
  • John Conroy – Water Infrastructure Lead

In our ongoing commitment to fostering inclusivity, we have made progress in implementing our Gender Diversity Strategy. Additionally, this year we relaunched our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), further emphasising our commitment to reconciliation and strengthening our relationships with Indigenous communities.

Thank you to our shareholders for their continual support. Thank you to our clients for trusting us with their aspirations and together we continue to raise the bar and innovate. Thank you to the entire BG&E team for your outstanding contributions. The continued success can be attributed to your collective efforts, and each one of you should take pride in this accomplishment. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and professionalism.  We look forward to the next wave of projects in FY24 to continue to stimulate and challenge us all.
